New Delhi: A day after her father M Karunanidhi's DMK lost power in Tamil Nadu, a
Delhi court will pronounce its verdict on the bail plea of Rajya Sabha
MP Kanimozhi, named by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as a
co-accused in the 2G spectrum case.
If she is denied bail, Kanimozhi will be arrested.
Special judge OP Saini will also rule on the bail plea of Managing
Director of Kalaignar TV, Sharath Kumar, on Saturday. Sharath Kumar has
been named along with Kanimozhi as a co-accused in the second
chargesheet filed by the investigative agency in the case.
The judge had on May 6 reserved order on their bail applications till May 14.
The DMK's A Raja allegedly gave spectrum and mobile network licenses at
very low prices in 2008 when he was Telecom Minister to companies that
are now being investigated for foreign exchange violations and
money-laundering. A company that he favoured - Swan Telecom- has been
accused of sending him Rs. 214 crore via Kalaignar TV.
Both Kanimozhi and Sharath Kumar have denied that the money was a
kickback from the 2G scam. They say it was part of an equity deal that
fell apart; the money was returned with interest, they have claimed.
However, the CBI, which is investigating the 2G scam, says the money was
sent back only after Mr Raja began being questioned about the alleged
conspiracy.
Kanimozhi's lawyer Ram Jethmalani has argued in court that she was not
an active manager of the financial affairs of Kalaignar TV, in which she
owns 20 per cent stake. Ram Jethmalani, who is representing her, said
that she was being targeted because she was the Chief Minister's
daughter, and that she should get bail because she is a woman.
However, the CBI has claimed that Kanimozhi was the guiding hand and the brain behind Kalaignar TV.
A Raja, who quit as Telecom minister after the scam broke last year, is
already in jail. As are his aide RK Chandolia, former telecom secretary
Siddhartha Behura and Swan Telecom promoter Shahid Usman Balwa.
Senior officials of companies accused of conspiring with Raja to benefit
from the 2G scam - Vinod Goenka of Swan Telecom, Sanjay Chandra of
Unitech and three officials of the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group - Gautam
Doshi, Hari Nair and Surendra Pipara - are also in judicial custody.
